Mrs. A has been teaching art at Beverly Hills Intermediate since 2003. She teaches 7th grade visual art as well as the advanced 7th and 8th grade painting classes. She is also the co-sponsor of the BHI National Junior Honor Society. Together with her husband, Mr. Anders, the technology teacher at BHI, she will be updating the school website.
Mrs. Anders has an honors degree in Advertising/Graphic Design from Sam Houston State University. Upon graduation she worked for 2 1/2 years with the Houston Rockets as their in-house graphic artist. She designed everything from website graphics, to flyers, to billboards, to T-shirts. Her career culminated with the development of the “Be Part of Something Big” campaign which she created and earned an American Marketing Association Crystal Award for. The concept also garnered a silver Addy award for television commericals.
Mrs. Anders then became interested in teaching and through the Pasadena ATCP program, she earned her teacher’s certification for art. Since then, she has been active not only with art in the classroom, but freelance graphic design as well as mural painting. This interest lead her to take art outside the classroom and “to the wall” during the 2007-08 school year where her 8th grade advanced art painters created a mural that spans over 100 feet long and 7 feet high! The passion for the stories behind the artworks spurred her to write and receive a grant from Fund for Teachers to study some of the artworks on the mural further in Paris, France in the summer of 08. Mrs. Anders is also a member of the Texas Art Educator Association and was a presenter at the annual conference in 2008. Mrs. Anders has attended workshops at the Glassell School of Art as well as Rice University.
When not creating art, Mrs. Anders enjoys her yoga practice and singing with the Houston Symphony Chorus in addition to spending time with her human family as well as her animal family, two dogs named Obi-Wan and Arwen (the models for the dog show contest!) and her cat, Georgia Q.
Hi, Mrs. A,
Phil Amara here, Boston Public Schools teacher. I’m been researching fundforteachers.org, and wonder if you could shed some light on the process. I’ve been doing a lot of cultural work in my elementary classroom, hosting ‘ambassadors’ from Asian countries, including Japan and Turkey. This year, I’ll be doing a digital penpal program with a counterpart class in Osaka. I’d like to cointinue to build the program. The FforT site informed me that they do not fund my travel. I’m curious, then, what kind of things they would fund for a program of my time. Currently, I’m not taking any coursework when I visit Japan.
What kinds of things did FforT fund for you’re program? Any suggestions on what I could do with mine?
No rush, but would love your help! ^_^
